There are many reasons why people seek therapy. Therapy is a very effective way for many people to work through whatever it is that they are currently struggling with. Therapy also is an investment… in time, money and energy!
Group therapy is something that oftentimes isn’t sought out at first. Group therapy is a form of therapy where multiple people come together regarding similar issues. The group is facilitated by a trained therapist, yet a lot of what makes the group process so effective is the sharing between group participants. Sometimes group therapy is used in conjunction with individual therapy, and sometimes group therapy is effective on its own.
Below are 4 reasons why group therapy can be the right choice for you:
Helps you realize you are not alone
According to Yalom in The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, “Many patients enter therapy with the disquieting thought that they are unique in their wretchedness, that they alone have certain frightening or unacceptable problems, thoughts, impulses and fantasies.”
While it’s true that each of us is unique and may have unique circumstances, none of us is alone in our struggles.
Enhanced acceptance of self and others
Group therapy promotes a natural process of acceptance, of both self and others. This occurs as you learn to relate to yourself and others more honestly and directly throughout the group process.
Increased Feedback
Group therapy can provide people with feedback from not only the therapist but multiple perspectives as well. Getting different perspectives is often helpful in promoting growth and change.
Less expensive
Group therapy is cost effective. Whereas individual therapy can range from $75-$150 per session. Group therapy is often about a third of the price of individual therapy.
